Multiculturalpedia

Background: The Multiculturalpedia http://www.netlaputa.ne.jp/~tokyo3/e/ is a Japanese project that began in 1997 and is presented in both Japanese and English versions. The purpose of the project is to look at customs and daily routines around the world to find similarities and to appreciate differences.

Audience: Elementary - High School students; Educators

Types of Activities Offered: Multiculturalpedia offers project discussion areas and a message board for discussion about diversity and multicultural topics.

One World

Background: OneWorld's site is dedicated to bringing news from around the world particularly sharing what is happening in both the "developed" and "under-developed" world. It came online in 1995, and offers news, information and activities for several different audiences.

Audience: Elementary -Middle School students; Educators

Types of Activities Offered: OneWorld-Next Generation http://www.oneworld.net/nextgen/index.html offers many different interactive projects in several different curricular areas. Currently, BritKids is the main project focussing on diversity issues specifically. (see: OneWorld-Informative)

  • BritKids- is an interactive multimedia site exploring attitudes about racial discrimination.
    • Serious Issues -provides information about public attitudes and racial discrimination.
    • In the Classroom-provides suggestions for incorporating the project in the class room.

Y Forum

Background: TheY? Forum <http://www.yforum.com/welcome1.html> is a question and answer forum aimed at giving people (teens and adults) an opportunity to ask and answer questions about race, ethnicity and culture. It's mission is to "get people to talking across their differences."

Audience: High School students; Adults (Though no age limit is set, the site is geared more toward high school students and adults.)

Types of Activities Offered: Messages submitted on the Web are monitored to avoid confrontation. Y? also offers a chat area. a searchable database of past topics, and links to other sites dealing with issues similar to those posed on the site.

  • Browse the Categories- allows users to select the topic and number of messages they wish to view.
  • Y? Chat-is a Web chat area where people with differing backgrounds can get together to learn about and understand their diversity.
